Literacy

Ruth Hardman Center

The mission of the Ruth G. Hardman Adult Literacy Services is to promote literacy through adult basic and English language instruction. This program is the only free, comprehensive one-on-one literacy program within Tulsa County. Trained and supported tutors are matched with one student and meet weekly. TCCL provides all materials and resources for the tutors and their students.

ESL Specialist

Approximately half of the 250 adult learners in the literacy program are English language learners. Spanish is the native language of about 60% of the English language learners. However, the students of the literacy program come from all over the globe, including Syria, Taiwan, India, Israel, Korea and Germany. All English language learners come with the same goal: to be able to understand and fluently speak English. Our ESL Specialists help provide students with the option to explore greater job opportunities, further their education, gain financial independence, support their families, get involved in the community, and gain confidence. Funding for these positions are provided by the Tulsa Library Trust and The Raymond and Bessie Kravis Foundation.

TCCL offers ESL tutors personalized support and help with materials selection for their tutoring sessions. They also provide continuing education workshops on various techniques and strategies for English language instruction. Students are given free workshops to meet with other students in the program to give them the opportunity to practice their new English skills.
